EPAM Success Story - Samsung America's Order and Warehouse Management System Brings Process and Automation to the Highest Level

Samsung

Samsung is a $76 billion company. Samsung's business areas range from semiconductors to oil tankers, trade and banking to information communications. Samsung's technology, research and development, investment, and services include 170,000 employees at 305 international offices in 65 countries.

Situation

In 1997, Samsung America was faced with an aging mainframe platform and business software that had outlived its currency and usefulness. Samsung decided to replace its existing business systems without sacrificing processes or features by building a proprietary system from scratch. The top priority for this replace and reengineer effort was to ensure the highest possible level of process control and automation for order processing and warehouse management systems. In addition, their technical strategy was to migrate from mainframe systems to a personal computer LAN client-server architecture.

Solution

Samsung retained EPAM to design and build a new textile order management and warehouse management system to meet Samsung's business needs. Although Samsung had seriously considered the integration of several commercial-off-the-shelf packages, their decision was made easy when EPAM was able to develop and showcase a visual, scalable prototype, which addressed the most critical of Samsung's needs.

System Highlights

The Samsung Order Entry and Warehouse Management Systems provide real-time seamless integration between order entry and fulfillment. Order entry for Samsung's complex garments (style, type, size, and color) is accomplished through an easy-to-use user interface that cut 60% of the data entry time compared to the previous legacy system. The system supports remote offices and warehouses in Amsterdam, New York City, New Jersey, and California.

The system has advanced real-time workflow support, and the following high-level features:

Production styles
Accounts
Percentages of sells, shipping, and orders
Credit check
Monitoring sales transactions
Scheduling delivery
Monitoring of orders, goods availability, delivery dates, and delivery
Planning and monitoring of documents for shipping activities
Printing and sending of shipping output or generated files in ASN format or to UPS
Creating of printed or electronically transmitted documents
COSI ready interface - sending information through EDI to COSI

Results

Samsung reduced operating costs and increased customer service levels with this new system. The cost savings vs. licensing of enterprise software, implementation, and customization was approximately $5 million (US). The system was also designed to easily scale to meet the needs of increased business ten times over projection to assure long-term investment protection.

"The users of the EPAM order and warehouse management system are very satisfied with the features and find that they are much more efficient at doing their jobs. I am happy that electing to do this custom project has produced such a good system and unbelievable project savings."

M S Lee,
President Samsung America
